Foam Carvings
Clinicians must create a positive model of a residual limb or orthotic shape in order to create a definitive device. The positive model, carved out of a stiff foam, serves as the basis for fabricating a prosthetic socket or orthotic device.

To Select Proper Composite Toe Spring Stiffness:
- Calculate adjusted body weight. (Adjusted body weight = patient body weight + loads normally or routinely carried)
- Using adjusted body weight and patient activity level, select the toe spring stiffness from the chart below.
- If the amputee’s weight is near the border between two categories:
- choose the higher of the two categories if the amputee is very active or has a longer residual limb.
- choose the lower of the two categories if the amputee is moderately active or has a very short residual limb.
